Class Dates and Times: French Wine Scholar classes are held on Mondays from 6:00pm to 9:000pm.

French Wine Scholar Full Program

FWS certificateThe French Wine Scholar program is an official course of study designed for wine trade. It is endorsed by Wines of France/French National Wine Office and is taught by licensed French Wine Scholar Instructors. Each program follows the content outlined below in the individual session abstracts. This content will be the same regardless of whether you study in California or Calgary. Teaching materials are likewise uniform wherever the program is offered. It was developed by the French Wine Society to provide current, accurate information on the wine regions of France and validate proficiency in the Wines of France. Wine professionals who follow this in-depth curriculum on the wines of France and pass the exam, earn the French Wine Scholar (FWS) post-nominal. In order to prepare properly for the FWS exam, you must read and study the FWS manual carefully.

The exam is given in multiple-choice format. There are 100 questions covering all of the wine regions of France. Passing score is 75.

Our series consists of 11 classes and the FWS exam, as follows:

Tuition

    : $1,500 for all 11 classes and the FWS exam. It includes:
    • 33 hours of instruction with tutored tastings of over 75 French wines
    • 280-page, full-color FWS Study Manual ($135 value)
    • FWS exam registration ($150 value)
    • Access for 1 full year to the FWS Online Study Program ($295 value)
    • Set of four professional tasting glasses ($50 value)
    • Earning the French Wine Scholar (FWS) professional wine certification upon passing the FWS exam, a diploma and a FWS lapel pin
    • Qualifying to teach FWS programs if you receive top scores on the exam
    • The opportunity to participate in the study abroad programs if you are an active FWS instructor

French Wine Scholar Single Course Offerings

FWS 01 Intro to France and Alsace

Alsace harvestLearn about French wine labeling and how it relates to European Union regulations. Next dive into the fascinating Alsace region learning about the history, geography, climate and wines at the French-German border. Until recently this wine region only consisted of three AOCs, but now has fourteen. The diversity of soil types, grape varieties and wine styles makes for a complicated sensory landscape. Do you know the difference between Klevner and Klevener? The relationship between Pinot Gris, Tokay and Furmint? Can you explain the difference between a Vendanges Tardives and a Sélection de Grains Nobles? This class takes Alsace beyond the basics. It includes a tasting of 6-7 wines. The class can be taken as part of the FWS series or on its own.

FWS 03a Burgundy's Cote D'or

Discover the history and historic precedent behind such subtle and nuanced fractionalization. This class covers an in-depth history, geography, climate and the wines of Burgundy’s Cote D’Or, the most complex French region and for many people the best wines in the world. It includes a tasting of 6-7 wines. The class can be taken as part of the FWS series or on its own. This class is followed the following week with the rest of Burgundy from Chablis in the North to Macon in the South.  Attendees at all of our events must be 21 or older.

FWS 04 Beaujolais, Jura & Savoie

BeaujolaisDiscover the multi-faceted nature of Beaujolais as expressed through its different soil types and vinification techniques. Learn how carbonic maceration and traditional fermentation changes the flavors in the glass. Find out how varying trace elements in the granitic soils of the Crus Beaujolais create wines of different character and age-ability. Beaujolais Nouveau may be a light-hearted quaff, but the subject is far from simple. This class covers an in-depth history, geography, climate and the wines of Beaujolais, the gateway to the south. From there, we head East to Jura and Savoie along the Swiss border south of Lake Geneva. The wines are rarely exported but are worth seeking out. Class includes a tasting of 6-7 wines. FWS 05 Loire Valley

Loire vineyardDid you know that the Sauvignon Blanc vineyards of Menetou-Salon, Reuilly, and Quincy are all grown on Kimmeridgean marl? That one of the longest-lived white wines in the world is Savennières? Are you familiar with Breton, Côt and Pineau d’Aunis? It’s time to explore a wine culture as long as the river itself. There are dozens of AOCs that flank the banks of the Loire. Learn about the undiscovered treasures of this region and explore its diversity of grape varieties and wine styles. This class covers an in-depth history, geography, climate and the wines of the Loire, also known as le Jardin de la France. Class includes a tasting of 6-7 wines. Explore Bordeaux’s distinctive terroirs in order to better understand the nature of the blend, and then discover how and why the blend has changed over the past 150 years. This class covers an in-depth history, geography, climate and the wines of Bordeaux, the most age-worthy of all French wines. It includes a tasting of 6-7 wines. FWS 07 Rhone Valley

Cote Rotie

The Rhône River serves as the gravitational axis around which its two halves revolve; the northern half clings tightly, the southern half expands outward and experiences less pull to the riverbanks. These two different wine cultures possess distinctive soils and topographies and they craft vastly disparate wines with unique personalities. It’s one region, but two brave new worlds. Explore them both. This class covers an in-depth history, geography, climate and the wines of the Rhone in the warm south of France. It includes a tasting of 6-7 wines. This week we travel to the extreme south to the Côte d’Azur of Provence. Did you know that Provence is the oldest wine region in France? Although Languedoc & Roussillon are often discussed together, they are distinctive regions with distinctive personalities. Did you know that 90% of France’s Vins Doux Naturels hail from Roussillon? Did you know that France’s first and oldest sparkling wine was produced in the Languedoc? This class covers an in-depth history, geography, climate and the wines of the Provence, Languedoc and Roussillon. It includes a tasting of 6-7 wines. FWS 09 Southwest & Corsica

Cote D'Azur Map

Certainly, Southwest France is under-appreciated, under-marketed and under-valued. Although these vineyards pre-date the vineyards of Bordeaux they have long languished in obscurity. Find out why. Corsica is home to grapes that sound more Italian than French. And there’s a reason for this. This vinous trek will take you through some charted, but often-unexplored territory.

This class covers an in-depth history, geography, climate and the wines of Southwest France and Corsica. It includes a tasting of 6-7 wines. The class can be taken as part of the FWS series or on its own.
