Rhône Master-Level Program

Master the Rhône with 1 Study Manual + 11 Webinars + 3 Master Workshops!

San Francisco Wine School is partnering with the Wine Scholar Guild to provide a unique and dynamic learning experience to master the wines of the Rhône Valley. Study online with a series of eleven webinars conducted by a dream team of producers, Masters of Wine and Rhône experts including Louis Barruol, 14th generation Gigondas winemaker and Paul Amsellem, owner of Domaine Vernay and producer of some of the greatest viogniers in the world.

Then, taste an exemplary line-up of special wines and put theory to the
taste test with a three-part lecture and tutored tasting series here, at San Francisco Wine School.

For each of the three workshops, Instructor Christophe Tassan will be guide students through a stellar line-up of 12 still, sparkling and fortified wines while reviewing the key learning points in the Rhône Master-Level Program. Come prepared to sip, savor and discuss the factors that make the Rhône one of the greatest of France’s wine regions! Truly, there’s no place like Rhône!

See sample wine list for the complete program!

Each workshop is 2-hours long and includes 12 wines. Workshops are included in the full Rhône Master Level Program or available for $125 per session on their own.

WORKSHOP #1: OF GRAPES AND GRANDEUR: EXPRESSIONS OF RHÔNE TERROIR - Saturday, April 23rd, 11:00am-1:00pm
Most people think “red” when they think “Rhône” and with good reason!
But we will first explore Viognier, Marsanne, Roussanne and Muscat
as they express their Rhône terroirs. All of these grapes call the Rhône home for a reason and their roots are deep. Next, we will focus on Syrah, the shining star of the Northern Rhône. This grape manifests itself differently based on location and blending partners. We will examine the many sides of this multi-faceted grape while comparing and contrasting the red Crus of the North.  See sample wine list for Workshop #1.

WORKSHOP #2: ROCK STARS AND FABULOUS APPELLATIONS ON THE FRINGE -  Saturday, May 14th, 11:00am-1:00pm

This tasting will explore the wine quality pyramid within the Rhône... first by comparing CdRV with CdRV-Named Village, then by tasting through a representative slate of Southern non-Crus... then by tasting and comparing the Southern Crus. Can your palate discern the differences between GSM blends by appellation? Explore the land via wineglass.   See sample wine list for Workshop #2.

WORKSHOP #3: A TERROIR-IST APPROACH TO TAVEL, A WINEMAKER’S WINDOW ON CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE, AND AN ICONIC VIEW OF THE RHÔNE! -  Saturday, June 4th, 11:00am-1:00pm

Tavel and Châteauneuf-du-Pape deconstructed! Taste the three terroirs of
Tavel (sand, limestone and galets) as they manifest themselves in the
glass, then see how all three terroirs combine in a Tavel that incorporates
fruit from all three soil types! Taste old vine Grenache in a single varietal
Châteauneuf-du-Pape then taste two more Châteauneufs that incorporate
different grapes and different winemaking variables. Lastly taste two
iconic representations of why there is no place like Rhône!  See sample wine list for Workshop #3.
