CSW pinThe Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) Exam is a rigorous exam, which tests a candidate’s wine knowledge and mastery of key elements within the worlds of viticulture and wine production. The San Francisco Wine School has created a comprehensive, highly focused preparation program for the Society of Wine Educators’ Certified Specialist of Wine to help ensure your success on this challenging exam. Set yourself apart from other wine professionals with this certification of your expertise. Students enrolled in this in-depth program will gain a solid understanding of the world of wine while participating in a fun setting with other wine professionals seeking success on the challenging CSW exam. Our proven techniques and expert instructors will help you acquire the knowledge for a great test-taking experience! The CSW program is divided into 5 units that we have broken into 9 class sessions, covering wine tasting, terminology, composition, chemistry, flaws, viticulture, enology, labels, laws and wine regions of the world.  In-depth tastings and discussions of over 60 wines from the relevant regions are included in every course.  At the end of the full series is an opportunity to review test your knowledge of the wines, regions and laws on the CSW exam. The Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) is an internationally recognized credential conferred by the Society of Wine Educators (SWE) which has branches in countries around the world. Obtaining the CSW demonstrates your mastery of wines of the entire world and can help you launch or further your career in wine. It is also a mandatory prerequisite for SWE’s top credential Certified Wine Educator (CWE). The CSW Study Guide, SWE Online Wine Academy, CSW exam and “The One” set of 4 professional tasting glasses are included in the full series registration – a $650 value. Note: All Attendees of our classes must be at least 21 years of age.

CSW 01 Tasting, Chemistry & Flaws So, how do you taste and evaluate a glass of wine? A Certified Wine Specialist has the skills and expertise to identify a balanced wine, harmonious and complex wine. This class will cover the critical aspects of tasting, as well as understanding and articulating the chemistry and flaws associated. It includes a guided tasting of 6-8 wines to demonstrate differences in acidity, tannin, body and more. The class may be taken as part of the CSW series or on its own.

CSW 02 Viticulture & Viniculture Do you know the difference between viticulture and viniculture? Learn the science and art of grape growing andwinemaking. Set yourself apart and master these important concepts. The class includes a guided tasting of 6-8 wines to demonstrate differences in climate, production techniques and more. CSW 03 Northern France France is one of the world’s major wine-producing nations. In fact, their Appellation d’Origine Controlee system is the basis for most wine labeling laws around the world and many of their grapes are grown throughout the world. In this course, you will learn the cool climates, grapes and wine styles of northern France. This class includes a guided tasting of 6-8 wines from Champagne, Alsace, Loire and Burgundy. The class may be taken as part of the CSW series or on its own.

CSW 04 Southern France Continue enhancing your French wine knowledge. Journey with us in the classroom as we leave last week’s cool white wines of the north for this week’s warm red wines of the south. Study and taste the French wines that are often imitated but never duplicated. In this course, you will learn the warm climates, grapes and wine styles of southern France. The class includes a guided tasting of 6-8 wines from Bordeaux, Beaujolais and the Rhone. The class may be taken as part of the CSW series or on its own.

CSW 05 Italy Understanding the regions and categories of Italian Wine can be complicated. With 20 wine regions in Italy, grape growing throughout country, hundreds of indigenous varietals, climates ranging from Alpine to Mediterranean and diverse soil types, Italian wine study can be daunting. It is critical for the Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) to have extensive knowledge to understand, appreciate, and communicate the complexity of Italy. This class includes a guided tasting of 6-8 wines from Piedmont, Tuscan, Veneto and more. The class may be taken as part of the CSW series or on its own.

CSW 06 Spain, Portugal & Eastern Mediterranean Sunshine, warm breezes, olive oil, wine and the Mediterranean Sea tie Portugal, Spain, Greece and several other countries together. Learn the similarities and differences of some of the oldest wine regions of the world and some of the trendsetting new wines, as well.This class includes a guided tasting of 6-8 wines including Cava, Rioja, Jerez, Porto, Madeira and more. CSW 07 Germany & Eastern Europe Don’t underestimate the importance of Germany and Eastern Europe in the wine world. The wines of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire have much in common and just as many differences. Learn the regions, climate, grapes, complex labeling and many styles of wines from Germany, Austria, Hungary and more. The class includes a guided tasting of 6-8 wines including: Spätburgunder, Riesling from Mosel and Rheingau, Grüner Veltliner from Austria, Tokaji from Hungary and more. The class may be taken as part of the CSW series or on its own.

CSW 08 North America The United States is the world’s fourth largest wine producer. In this class we cover the wines of California and other states, plus Canada and Mexico. Discover labeling laws, American Viticultural Areas, the history, climates and wine styles of each region. The class includes a guided tasting of 6-8 wines from California, Oregon, Washington and Canada. The class may be taken as part of the CSW series or on its own.

CSW 09 Southern Hemisphere Dive down under to explore all of the wines of the Southern Hemisphere in one night. These New World wine regions continue to challenge the supremacy of Old World regions and increase their market share worldwide. Learn about the regions, climates, grapes and wine styles of Chile, Argentina, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. The class includes a guided tasting of 6-8 wines such as: Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, Casablanca Chardonnay, Maipo Carmenere, Mendoza Malbec, Barossa Shiraz and Stellenbosch Pinotage. The class may be taken as part of the CSW series or on its own.

CSW 11 Certified Specialist of Wine Exam In this competitive job market, industry credentials are increasingly important. Prove your knowledge of the regions, wines and regulations of the world. The Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) credential exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions. Successful candidates who achieve a score of 75% or better are entitled to use the CSW post-nominal as part of their professional signature. They will also receive a certificate suitable for framing and a CSW lapel pin.The CSW also serves as the mandatory prerequisite for those wishing to pursue the Certified Wine Educator (CWE) certification. There are no exceptions to this rule, regardless of a candidate’s background or other credentials.
