WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF WINE: An entry-level weekend certification program to support customer service and sales functions in the hospitality, retailing and wholesaling industries.
This entry-level certification program, offered by Grape Experience, the most experienced provider of WSET certifications on the West Coast, covers wines of the world. The focus is on how to professionally taste wine, factors that influence style, quality and price, and an in-depth review of major grape varieties and wine types. Wine tasting is a part of every session with over 40 wines tasted during the program.

Unit 1: Systematic tasting technique, wine service and storage
Unit 2: Factors influencing style, quality and price of wine, label terminology
Unit 3: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay – the grapes and wine style differences from around the world – the basics on Burgundy
Unit 4: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc – the grapes and wine style differences from around the world – the basics on Bordeaux
Unit 5: Syrah/Shiraz, Grenache and Riesling – the grapes and wine style differences from around the world – the basics on the Rhone and Germany
Unit 6: Other important white grape varieties/wines, sweet wines
Unit 7: Other important black grape varietals/wines
Unit 8: Sparkling & fortified wines (Sherry and Port)
Unit 9: Exam: 1 hour, 50 multiple-choice questions.
Each session includes tasting of at least five wines.
The Wine & Spirit Education Trust, or WSET, was founded in London in 1969 and is regarded as one of the world's leading providers of wine education. WSET Level 2 is a great way for anyone who works in wine, wants a career in the wine industry or has a serious interest in the subject to deepen their knowledge.
The certification program concludes with a one-hour, 50 multiple choice examination. Students who earn a passing score of 55% (27 correct answers) will receive a WSET Level 2 Award. Students who earn a score of 70% - 84% pass with Merit. Those who earn a score of 85% or above pass with Distinction.
